President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is considering a full ban on online gambling in the Philippines, according to Presidential Communications Office undersecretary Claire Castro. Speaking at a Wednesday press briefing, she said the president is carefully reviewing the potential economic and social impact of such a decision.

“Decisions like this are thoroughly studied to assess their impact on the economy and the public,” Castro told reporters, noting that rushed bans could backfire. “Sometimes, banning legal and licensed online gaming sites results in a rise in illegal platforms, which could affect the economy even more.”

The potential ban follows recent proposals from the Department of Finance to increase taxes on the country’s online gambling sector. Since last year’s crackdown on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) targeting international users, the focus has shifted to domestically licensed online platforms.

In early July, the Department of Finance floated the idea of introducing new sector-specific taxes alongside stricter controls on digital gambling access. Meanwhile, the country’s central bank, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), has drafted a circular aimed at limiting the use of e-wallets and digital payment tools for online gambling.

Industry Reaction and Public Debate

While some senators have publicly called for an outright ban, others within the government and industry have pushed for stricter oversight instead of prohibition. Pagcor Chairman Alejandro Tengco stated last week that “tighter control” would be more effective than a complete shutdown.

In response to growing scrutiny, the operators of the Philippines’ three largest integrated casino resorts issued a joint statement defending their practices. The companies, which also run online gambling operations, said they maintain the highest standards of transparency, legality, and integrity.
