Australia’s online gambling watchdog has named Polymarket among four “illegal online gambling sites” slated for domain blocking, expanding a blacklist that now nears 1,300 websites. The move follows a Crikey report indicating the platform was courting Australian users.
ACMA said its investigation found the services were operating contrary to the Interactive Gambling Act 2007. Under the Telecommunications Act 1997, Australian internet providers are required to implement blocks when ACMA issues such requests.
Local targeting and geoblock gaps
Earlier reporting by Crikey detailed how Polymarket paid Australian Instagram and TikTok creators to push wagers on Australia-focused markets ahead of the 2025 federal election. The regulator’s probe was first made public in May.
Although Polymarket deploys geoblocking for Australia, Crikey notes that the restriction is easily sidestepped with a VPN. Many accounts placing bets on Australia-related markets appeared to belong to Australian users.
What the service is and where it’s already blocked
Polymarket is a crypto “prediction market” where people can wager on outcomes spanning politics, sport and more. The site is already inaccessible in France, Switzerland and Belgium; Australian ISPs have now been told to block it as well.
Crikey reports that Polymarket has been contacted for comment. ACMA published the notice on Wednesday, listing the four sites and outlining the statutory basis for the new blocks.
