Seven people have been charged in the UK in connection with an alleged fraud scheme targeting bet365’s welcome bonuses for new customers.

The defendants appeared before Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court, where prosecutors outlined allegations involving the fraudulent acquisition of promotional betting funds, the use of third-party personal data and the transfer of suspected criminal proceeds.

According to the prosecution, the alleged scheme operated between January 2021 and August 2023.

Prosecutors Allege Use of Third-Party Data

The alleged organiser of the scheme is 35-year-old Giuseppe Sangiovanni. Prosecutors claim he possessed lists containing other people’s personal information and used false representations to obtain bet365 introductory bonuses. He is also accused of transferring criminal funds to other bank accounts.

The other defendants are Patrick White, Julian Mackie, Stephianne Black, Benjamin Leach, Simeon Redway and Adon Bridgman-Simon. The charges against members of the group relate to allegations including fraud, obtaining bonus funds and handling or transferring criminal proceeds.

The allegations have not been proven in court.

How the Alleged Bonus Fraud Worked

According to the prosecution’s version of events, the group allegedly targeted promotional offers intended for genuine new customers.

The scheme reportedly involved using personal details belonging to third parties, creating or accessing accounts through false information and obtaining free betting credits offered as part of bet365’s customer acquisition campaigns. Prosecutors further allege that funds connected to the activity were transferred between accounts.

The case highlights a longstanding challenge for gambling operators: welcome bonuses can attract new customers, but they can also become targets for organised bonus abuse and identity-related fraud.

Several Defendants Face Further Court Hearings

Sangiovanni remains in custody, with his case postponed until August 20 following technical problems with a video link, according to reports.

White and Black were released on bail and are due to appear before Gloucester Crown Court in September. An arrest warrant was issued for Bridgman-Simon after he allegedly failed to attend court.

bet365 Has Faced Bonus Fraud Cases Before

The latest case is not the first alleged large-scale fraud involving bet365 promotional offers.

In a separate case, Jon Howard was sentenced to five years in prison in 2023 after playing a leading role in a scheme that involved creating more than 1,000 bet365 accounts under different identities to exploit bonus offers. The operator was reportedly defrauded of more than £236,000.

The cases underline why operators continue to invest in identity verification, payment monitoring and systems designed to detect multiple or suspicious accounts.
