UK gambling harm charity Gambling with Lives has confirmed that some of its data may have been compromised following a cyberattack on Beacon, its third-party customer relationship management (CRM) provider.
The charity, which supports families bereaved by gambling-related suicides and campaigns to raise awareness of gambling harm, was informed of the incident on August 6. Beacon’s systems were breached in late July or early August, with attackers reportedly downloading sensitive information.
Beacon provides CRM services to more than 1,500 charities and cultural organisations, meaning the incident could have affected a large number of organisations beyond Gambling with Lives.
What Gambling with Lives Data May Have Been Exposed?
According to Gambling with Lives, the compromised information could include personal and donor data such as:
- Names
- Addresses
- Contact details
- Dates of birth
- Donation records
The charity also said that potentially sensitive health and safeguarding information may have been affected.
However, Gambling with Lives confirmed that banking information was not included among the data believed to have been compromised. The full scope of the breach remains under investigation.
Attackers Used Compromised Credentials
Beacon told Gambling with Lives that attackers used compromised credentials to gain unauthorized access to its systems. Copies of backup files were likely downloaded by the attackers.
Beacon has since engaged specialist cybersecurity experts and reported the incident to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
The company says it has secured the affected systems, reset relevant credentials and introduced additional security monitoring and safeguards. External cybersecurity specialists have not identified evidence of continued unauthorized access since the incident was contained.

Gambling with Lives has urged people who may have been affected to exercise caution when receiving emails or other communications.
The warning is particularly relevant following a data breach, as stolen contact information can potentially be used in phishing campaigns or other fraudulent activity.
