Malaysia’s Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has named Facebook the country’s largest source of problematic online gambling content.

According to data from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Facebook accounted for 78% of all detected online gambling content. YouTube ranked second with 18%, while TikTok represented 4% of the total.

More Than 470,000 Pieces of Harmful Content Flagged

The MCMC flagged 470,593 pieces of problematic online content for removal. Platforms subsequently took down 436,661 items, representing approximately 93% of the total.

The scale of the figures highlights the challenge Malaysian authorities face in monitoring gambling promotions, scam campaigns and other harmful material distributed through major social media platforms.

Facebook Also Leads in Scam Content

Online gambling was not the only category where Facebook ranked first.

The platform accounted for 53% of all reported scam content, according to Fahmi. Overall, gambling and scam-related material represented 91% of all content removal requests handled by the authorities.

Malaysia Calls for Greater Responsibility From Platforms

Fahmi criticized social media companies for relying too heavily on reports from users and regulators before taking action.

According to the minister, platforms should proactively identify and remove content that violates their own rules instead of waiting for complaints. Delays in moderation allow illegal gambling promotions and scam campaigns to reach more users and potentially cause greater harm.

The Malaysian government is also seeking closer cooperation between state agencies to improve intelligence gathering, accelerate investigations and support legal action against online crime.
