Playtech has been confirmed as the previously anonymous company that bankrolled Black Cube’s 2021 dossier on Evolution, a mandate priced at roughly $2.3m. The disclosure capped nearly five years of discovery battles in New Jersey that compelled the client’s identity into the open and set the stage for a broader courtroom contest.

Evolution says it will amend its defamation complaint to add Playtech and seek substantial damages. The company points to U.S. proceedings that have questioned the dossier’s credibility, and it expects the litigation to run well into 2026 as evidentiary issues are thrashed out.

What Black Cube did and what was alleged

Black Cube’s brief claimed Evolution content could be accessed from sanctioned or otherwise restricted markets, listing Iran, Sudan, Syria and China among the examples. Accounts of the operation describe role-playing, assumed identities and a cover as “Sudanese investors”, with conversations secretly recorded to build the file.

In August 2025, Black Cube supplied additional video it says supports its findings. Evolution disputes both the methods and the conclusions, calling the material misleading. Two U.S. regulators subsequently closed related reviews without action, while a New Jersey court criticized the dossier’s reliability, intensifying scrutiny of how the evidence was gathered.

Positions and market impact

Playtech rejects the notion of a smear campaign, saying its subsidiary lawfully engaged an independent intelligence firm to examine recurring complaints from operators, suppliers and regulators: “Wholly untrue and designed to distract us, we welcome court examination of the findings”.

Black Cube maintains its work was evidence-led and compliant, adding that “truth will prevail” when the full record is aired in court. Investors reacted sharply to the unmasking: Playtech fell as much as 30% at the lows, while Evolution ticked higher in Stockholm as the case shifted from questions of identity to the substance of the claims.
