Stake is preparing to enter Canada’s regulated online gambling market after its Canadian subsidiary secured an iGaming licence from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).

The approval marks an important step in Stake’s Canadian expansion strategy and gives the operator access to Alberta’s newly established regulated iGaming market. Subject to an operating agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), Stake Canada expects to launch its online casino and sportsbook in the province on October 12, 2026.

The Alberta launch will make Stake one of the latest major international gambling brands to enter Canada’s expanding regulated iGaming sector.

Stake Prepares for Alberta Launch

Stake Canada Ltd. received its approval from the AGLC after completing the province’s regulatory process.

The operator plans to offer both online casino games and sports betting in Alberta. Poker and daily fantasy sports are not expected to be part of the initial offering.

However, the licence does not mean that the platform can immediately accept bets.

Stake must first execute an operating agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation. The company currently expects this process to be completed in time for a planned October 12 launch.

This distinction is important because Alberta’s regulated market separates regulatory oversight from market operations. The AGLC acts as the regulator, while the Alberta iGaming Corporation oversees the province’s iGaming market.

Alberta Creates a New Regulated iGaming Market

Alberta officially launched its regulated iGaming market on July 13, 2026, becoming Canada’s second province with a competitive private-sector online gambling market after Ontario.

The province created the new framework partly in response to the size of its existing unregulated market.

According to the Alberta government, unregulated operators were estimated to account for approximately 70% of the province’s total iGaming market before the new framework was introduced. The regulated system is intended to give consumers access to licensed operators while introducing stronger player-protection and responsible-gambling requirements.

The framework includes requirements covering advertising, marketing, social responsibility, player protection, technology and information security.

Stake Expands Its Regulated-Market Footprint

The Alberta approval forms part of a broader strategy by Stake to move into locally regulated markets.

The company already operates in several regulated jurisdictions across Europe and Latin America, including Italy, Denmark, Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Argentina.

Stake Canada was established as a separate entity focused on entering regulated Canadian markets.

The company had previously been pursuing entry into Ontario, which launched its commercial iGaming market in 2022. Stake Canada currently has a pending application with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

The Ontario application means Alberta is expected to become Stake’s first regulated Canadian market if the planned launch goes ahead as scheduled.

Ontario Expansion Is Still Pending

Stake’s Canadian ambitions extend beyond Alberta.

The operator has already submitted an application to the AGCO for an Ontario licence. However, there is currently no confirmed launch date for the province.

Stake Canada previously considered using a third-party platform to accelerate its Ontario entry but later decided to focus on its own technology. According to Stake Canada General Manager Kris Abbott, the platform has now completed the required development and certification work, while the application remains under review.

This leaves Alberta as the immediate priority for Stake’s Canadian expansion.

If the Ontario application is approved, the operator would gain access to Canada’s largest provincial iGaming market in addition to Alberta.

Stake’s Shift Toward Locally Licensed Operations

Stake’s Canadian expansion also reflects a wider change in the company’s international strategy.

The Stake brand has historically had a large presence in markets where online gambling regulation varies considerably. Its move into regulated jurisdictions means adapting the platform to individual local requirements rather than operating through a single global model.

The company says its approach to regulated-market entry is focused on compliance, preparation and player safety.

Birgitte Sand, a Stake Canada board member, said that obtaining the Alberta licence provides a foundation for the company’s development in Canada and reflects its focus on meeting local regulatory standards.

Once launched, the Alberta platform will operate under AGLC requirements and include responsible-gaming and player-protection measures.

Alberta Tightens the Transition From the Grey Market

Stake’s arrival comes at an important moment for Alberta’s newly regulated market.

The province gave certain previously unregulated operators a limited transition period to move into the licensed framework. That period is scheduled to end on October 13, 2026.

Alberta officials have indicated that operators remaining outside the regulated system after the deadline could face enforcement action.

This makes the timing of Stake’s planned launch particularly significant.

Rather than continuing to compete in Canada’s grey market, Stake is preparing to operate under a provincial licence and comply with Alberta’s regulatory requirements.

The company has also completed platform certification work as part of the process of entering the regulated market.

Stake Targets Alberta’s Sports and Gaming Audience

Stake says Alberta represents a significant opportunity because of the province’s established sports and gaming culture.

The company’s strategy combines sportsbook and casino products with sports, entertainment and creator partnerships. Stake has built much of its international brand identity around major sports sponsorships, entertainment projects and digital content.

Kris Abbott, Country Manager at Stake Canada, described Alberta as an important milestone in the company’s Canadian expansion and said Stake intends to bring its established entertainment-focused approach to the province.

The operator will therefore enter a market where more than 30 licensed iGaming sites are already operating or preparing to operate following the launch of Alberta’s regulated framework.

What Happens Next?

Stake’s immediate objective is to complete the remaining operational requirements and sign its agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation.

If that process is completed as planned, Stake Canada expects its Alberta sportsbook and casino to become operational on October 12, 2026.

The company will then continue pursuing regulatory approval in Ontario.

Stake’s Alberta licence represents a significant development for the operator’s North American strategy. It also highlights the rapid transformation of Canada’s iGaming landscape as more provinces introduce regulated frameworks designed to move consumers and operators away from the grey market.

For Stake, Alberta could become the starting point for a broader Canadian expansion, with Ontario remaining the next major regulatory target.
