For a short period this week, visitors seeking French-language support from Belgium’s official gambling-addiction portal, gokhulp.be, were funneled to an external page packed with promotions for illegal online casinos. The issue came to light after local media highlighted that the site’s French link still referenced an old addressaide-aux-joueurs.be — which had changed hands and no longer represented the official service.
A check shows that aide-aux-joueurs.be now hosts lists and advertisements aimed at French players, underscoring how the defunct support domain had been repurposed for affiliate marketing. In contrast, the current French-language help program lives at joueurs.aide-en-ligne.be, and the Dutch-language hub remains gokhulp.be.
Domain squatters exploited a missed update
According to coverage that spoke with the site’s developer, opportunistic domain buyers “cybersquatters” snapped up the lapsed aide-aux-joueurs.be and filled it with links to iGaming operators lacking Belgian licenses turning a government-endorsed help pathway into a marketing funnel. This aligns with the Belgian government’s broader description of cybersquatting risks when expired or unprotected domains are captured and reused.
Belgium’s Gaming Commission clearly lists the official help addresses: gokhulp.be (Dutch) and joueurs.aide-en-ligne.be (French). Those vetted pages provide information, self-tests and access to professional support unlike the hijacked domain, which is not part of the official network.
Link fixed fast
After the problem was spotted, the link on gokhulp.be was corrected to point to the legitimate French-language site. The developer emphasized that the hijacked address leveraged the help program’s reputation to reach vulnerable users, and that the misdirect was unintended and swiftly resolved.
People seeking assistance should use the verified portals gokhulp.be (NL) and joueurs.aide-en-ligne.be (FR), as recognized by the Gaming Commission. For context on unlicensed operators and ongoing enforcement, the Commission also maintains a public list of illegal gambling sites targeting Belgians.
